Indian GNM nurse: step-by-step Ontario and US registration routes

Understand what a GNM diploma means for Ontario RN and RPN registration, what to send, when to pay, and how the US route differs.

Key points
  • A GNM diploma alone does not meet CNO's RN baccalaureate education requirement.
  • CNO must assess whether your education meets the Ontario RPN requirement.
  • A US state board decides its own education and exam eligibility requirements.

Step 1: Can a GNM nurse apply for NCLEX-RN or REx-PN?

Start with the destination and registration category. CNO explicitly says that a nursing diploma permitting RN practice in your home country does not satisfy Ontario's RN education requirement. A GNM qualification alone therefore does not establish Ontario NCLEX-RN eligibility. A recognised nursing baccalaureate, such as further degree education, must still meet CNO's requirements.

The Ontario RPN route requires nursing diploma education that meets CNO's rules for that category. Do not assume every Indian GNM diploma is automatically equivalent to an Ontario practical nursing diploma. Ask CNO about your specific education. CNO determines eligibility for REx-PN.

Step 2: Arrange credentials and source-sent documents

Check CNO's approved provider list before ordering an assessment. Current routes include WES, ICAS and ICES; qualifying NNAS expedited reports are also accepted. If choosing NNAS, confirm that its eligibility and selected regulator match your intended RN/LPN route. You do not need to pay every provider.

Gather identity and name-change evidence, your GNM award, transcripts and clinical education records. Ask your nursing school and State Nursing Council to send what the chosen provider requests directly. Keep initial registration evidence and any additional registrations available. CNO may separately request employment, practice, course or conduct evidence. Follow the exact recipient's form, delivery and translation instructions.

Step 3: Apply to CNO and complete its checklist

After your provider confirms that the assessment and educational documents were sent to CNO, create your own application in Maintain Your Membership and pay the instructed application fee. Monitor the portal for outstanding requirements. Do not share your login with an agent.

Complete the education assessment, evidence of practice, English or French proficiency, Transition to Practice, jurisprudence and remaining registration requirements. Extra education may be required; it is a separate cost. A report does not guarantee acceptance. CNO applications generally have a two-year period to meet requirements after application and payment.

Step 4: Register for the correct exam and finish registration

Follow CNO's exam instructions: RN means NCLEX-RN and RPN means REx-PN. The provider registration and CNO application are separate. Wait for the Authorisation to Test before booking within its validity period. Do not select US NCLEX-PN for Ontario practical nursing registration.

After passing, complete any remaining suitability, legal-entitlement-to-work and other requirements. Pay initial registration and the annual fee when CNO requests them. Confirm that your certificate is issued before practising or using the protected nursing title.

Step 5: Budget application, exam and yearly fees

For Ontario in 2026, CNO's RN/RPN General Class base charges are CAD 433 application, CAD 40 jurisprudence, CAD 69 initial registration and CAD 368 annual registration, plus 13% HST. The 2027 annual base fee is CAD 386, or CAD 436.18 with HST. Assessment costs are separate; NNAS Expedited is CAD 750. NNAS does not charge an annual practising membership fee.

Published exam base fees are CAD 350 for REx-PN and currently CAD 360 for Canadian NCLEX registration. Canadian NCLEX rises to CAD 570 on 1 February 2027; REx-PN is unaffected. An international scheduling charge may apply. Taxes, language tests, translations, education, police checks and travel can add costs. The planner separates known charges from the other costs you enter.

How does an Indian GNM nurse apply in the United States?

Choose the state board first. The board, not CNO or NNAS, decides whether your nursing education meets its requirements for RN or practical-nurse licensure. There is no blanket US rule that every GNM graduate can take NCLEX-RN. Ask the board or its accepted credential evaluator about your specific programme before paying.

The general sequence is state-board application, accepted nursing credential evaluation and source documents, background/fingerprint requirements, English evidence if required, any state jurisprudence requirement, Pearson VUE registration, board eligibility and ATT, exam, then remaining licence requirements. Texas is one example: it requests an accepted CES Full Education Professional report, applicable English evidence and other state requirements, including its recent-practice/graduation rules. Other states differ.

US registration currently costs USD 200 for NCLEX, rising to USD 350 on 1 February 2027; international scheduling adds USD 150 where applicable. Board, evaluation and immigration costs are separate. US licence renewals are state-specific, often on a multi-year cycle. There is no single nationwide annual nursing membership fee. A licence and an exam pass do not replace immigration or work authorisation.
