Indian BSc nurse: step-by-step Ontario and US registration routes
Follow the RN pathway from degree verification to NCLEX-RN, CNO registration and annual renewal, with a separate US state-board checklist.
- A BSc nursing degree fits the Ontario RN credential level, but CNO still verifies your programme and all requirements.
- Choose an accepted assessment provider before applying to CNO.
- NCLEX-RN passage is one requirement; registration and work authorisation remain separate.

Step 1: Choose Ontario RN or a US state-board route
For Ontario RN registration, CNO requires a recognised or approved nursing baccalaureate preparing you for the RN category. An Indian BSc Nursing degree is the relevant credential level, but the degree title alone does not guarantee acceptance. CNO verifies the programme and your individual registration requirements. Post Basic BSc applicants should provide the complete qualification history and documents CNO or the evaluator requests.
If applying in the United States, choose the state board before ordering an evaluation. The state decides education eligibility and its accepted services. CNO and NNAS do not issue US nursing licences.
Step 2: Verify your degree and assemble documents
CNO lists WES, ICAS and ICES as approved education credential assessment providers and continues to accept qualifying NNAS expedited reports. Choose a CNO-compatible service and report. Ask the provider about nursing education documents and delivery to CNO; a general immigration report is not necessarily enough.
Prepare identity/name-change evidence, nursing degree and transcripts, clinical/course records if requested, State Nursing Council registration and initial licence verification. Schools and licensing bodies send evidence using the provider's forms and accepted channels. Keep employer practice evidence ready for CNO requests. Use accepted certified translations when required. Do not send unrequested originals.
Step 3: Apply to CNO after the report is delivered
Once the provider confirms delivery of the report and corresponding educational documents, open your application in CNO's Maintain Your Membership portal yourself. Pay CNO's application fee there when instructed. Track the outstanding requirements in the portal.
CNO checks education, evidence of practice, English or French proficiency, Transition to Practice, jurisprudence, suitability and legal entitlement to work. A degree, assessment report or language-test result does not waive the other requirements. Follow CNO's individual instructions if extra assessment or education is needed.
Step 4: Register for NCLEX-RN, get your ATT and complete registration
Follow CNO's instructions to register separately with Pearson VUE for NCLEX-RN. CNO determines exam eligibility. Book only after receiving your Authorisation to Test and within its validity period. Use the programme and regulator details specified for your application.
After passing, fulfil all remaining requirements, then pay initial registration and the applicable annual fee. Confirm your CNO certificate before starting practice. Immigration and legal entitlement to work are separate from exam passage. Ontario RPN applicants use REx-PN instead of NCLEX-RN.
Step 5: Who receives the fees and what repeats each year?
Pay the assessment provider for credentials, CNO for the Ontario application and registration, and Pearson VUE for NCLEX. NNAS Expedited is CAD 750 if you select that route. CNO 2026 General Class RN/RPN base fees are CAD 433 application, CAD 40 jurisprudence, CAD 69 initial registration and CAD 368 annual registration. CNO adds 13% HST. The annual amount is CAD 415.84 in 2026 and CAD 436.18 in 2027, per certificate.
Canadian NCLEX registration is CAD 360 before applicable taxes, rising to CAD 570 on 1 February 2027; CAD 150 international scheduling may apply. Include language tests, translation, education, travel and other personal costs in your budget. NNAS is an assessment service, not a yearly practising membership. Its application expiry and reactivation charges are different from annual regulator renewal.
What are the steps for a BSc nurse seeking US registration?
Choose the destination state board, confirm that your programme meets its education rules, and order the exact nursing credential evaluation it accepts. Submit the board application and fee, arrange institution-sent transcripts and registration verification, complete fingerprint/background checks and English evidence when required, and meet any state-specific jurisprudence requirements.
Register with Pearson VUE, wait for board eligibility and the ATT, book the exam and pass NCLEX-RN. Complete the remaining licensing requirements. Texas, for example, requests an accepted CES Full Education Professional report and applies recent-practice/graduation rules to international applicants. Read the chosen board's current instructions instead of applying one state's process nationwide.
US NCLEX registration is USD 200 now and USD 350 from 1 February 2027, with USD 150 international scheduling where applicable. Evaluation, state-board fees and visa/work-authorisation processes are separate. Renewal fees and cycles vary by state; passing NCLEX does not create a nationwide membership or a guaranteed job.
