How long is the NCLEX?

You get up to five hours for the NCLEX-RN or NCLEX-PN, breaks included. See what counts against the clock and what happens if time runs out.

Key points
  • NCLEX-RN and NCLEX-PN: up to five hours, including all breaks.
  • REx-PN: up to four hours, including the tutorial and breaks.
  • The exam can end long before the limit.
  • If time runs out before the minimum number of questions, the result is a fail.

You have up to five hours to finish the NCLEX-RN or the NCLEX-PN, and that includes every break. How long you actually sit depends on how many of the 85 to 150 questions the computer gives you.

The time limit for each exam

ExamTime limitQuestions
NCLEX-RN5 hours85 to 150
NCLEX-PN5 hours85 to 150
REx-PN4 hours90 to 150

What counts against your time

The clock does not stop for breaks. The NCLEX test plans say that the five-hour limit includes all breaks. For REx-PN, the four hours cover the tutorial, the sample questions, all breaks and the exam itself. REx-PN breaks are optional.

You also go through security screening each time you enter the testing room, including after a break. Plan your breaks with that in mind.

How long you will actually sit

The exam ends when the computer has made its decision, when you reach the last question or when time runs out. A candidate who stops at 85 questions leaves much earlier than one who goes to 150. The REx-PN site adds that there is no time limit on a single question.

If you reach 150 questions on the NCLEX, five hours gives you an average of two minutes a question with no breaks. On REx-PN, four hours for 150 questions is a little over a minute and a half each.

What happens if time runs out

The run-out-of-time rule decides the result.

  • If you have not answered the minimum number of questions, you fail.
  • If you have answered the minimum, the computer uses your final ability estimate from the questions you completed. At or above the passing standard is a pass.

How to plan the day

  • Practise at least one full-length timed exam before the day, so the pace is familiar. Medibara's full adaptive mock is timed and locks each answer when you move on, as the exam does.
  • Keep a steady pace from the start. You cannot return to a question after you submit it.
  • Take a break when your concentration drops. A short break costs minutes. Careless answers cost more.

See how many questions are on the NCLEX for the rules that end the exam, and the study plan builder to schedule a timed practice exam before your date.
